Michael was born in Washington, D.C. at Garfield Hospital on July 14, 1955. He was the beloved first son of John Henry Wood and Bertha Christine Wood.
Michael was educated in the Washington, D.C. Public School System. He attended Calvin Coolidge High School, where he excelled in academics, and maintained a GPA of 3.8 – 4.0. Mike was a top tier track and field athlete throughout the city who won many medals and awards. He had offers from different universities, ultimately going to Princeton University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Minor in African American History. He then went on to receive his Master’s Degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for City Planning, Public Policy and Management. While at MIT, Mike joined the fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. He also became a member of the AME Church where he studied to become a minister. In May of 1981 he had his initial sermon at St. Paul AME Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts under Rev. Leroy Attles.
To mourn his death, Mike leaves behind three beloved brothers Jose, Carlos and Juan Wood; three sisters-in-law Yvette, Dawn and Arvis Wood. Also, a host of nephews, great nieces and great nephews, friends Vincent, Alfonse, Coach Shane and a host of many other friends and family.
Michael will live on in the memories, lives, and hearts of those he loved and touched.
